Update on my ability to get the Levitron to float.
With the Perpetuator I have had the Levitron levitating for over a week now. The Perpetuator uses a power supply to virbrate the levitron magnets witch causes the levitron to maintain it's spin. As long as my Cat does not get courious and try to play with it, and as long as the spin is maintained, the levetron will stay a float. I have not checked this morning to see if it is still floating, but if it is, it will be going on eight days. Oh yea, it also depends on the power not going off! Check out the movie I made with my Mavica: MVC-040V.MPG With a little practice, I can now average
After achieving this stability, I tried spinning the top with my right hand.
There is little difference in the average up time. If anything the average was
slightly better. The last thing I played with was the weights. I optimized the
weight so that the top just lifts off the plate. This helps a great deal to
lengthen the up time.
But, for now, go into the past... To when I first tried to float the top. Here are some pictures, and what I experienced. More pictures coming soon, I'm waiting for them to be developed.
To the right is just before liftoff. You must raise the top to about 1+1/4" to
get into the magnetic field. Then the rotation (which can't be seen in the
still picture) keeps it from tipping, and the magnetics keeps it floating. The
longest I have had it floating was about 135 seconds. Typically it only
stays long enough to take these pictures. [Not any more]:) Below are shots I took myself, boy was that tricky! I had to be fast enough to get to the camera, and snap the shot before the top flipped off to one side.
You can see in the bottom left picture, the top was just starting to filp as the shot was taken. The camera was on a tripod, just within arms reach. It took 10 attempts to get the two good pictures seen here. ![]()
